Pluralistic Jewish Education: Trends and Challenges

Joint Conference of the Melton Centre for Jewish Education, Hebrew University Jerusalem                                  and Hebrew Union College- Jerusalem Campus
27-28 July, 2009

Background:
The connection between Jewish Education and Pluralism constitutes one of the central challenges to Jewish education in Israel and in the Diaspora.  The subject is broad and multi-dimensional and there is insufficient clarity of concepts for the theoretical and practical implementation of pluralistic Jewish education.  There is thus a need for an in-depth examination, from a range of educational, psychological, sociological, cultural, religious and inter-religious perspectives.

In the Jewish education arena in Israel and worldwide, there are a large number of initiatives that sometimes further the theoretical discourse.  In the last few years, the discussion of pluralism has been transformed from an important question into an existential issue in many countries, and this against the background of the conflicting trends of globalization, on the one hand, and the search for cultural authenticity, on the other.  It is critically important to create an opportunity for deepening the dialogue between the theoretical discourse and the practical discourse, with an eye to mutual fertilization and edification from the meeting of various arenas of discourse.

Purposes of the Conference:

  1. To develop the arena of knowledge and clarify its different perspectives through research, writing and publication;
  2. To convene a meeting between educational practitioners in the field and critical and theoretical scholars in order to sharpen and deepen perspectives and knowledge;
  3. To promote educational and public discussion on the range of issues concerning Jewish pluralistic education.

Structure:
The conference will take the form of a research conference, that will take place at the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University and at the Jerusalem campus of Hebrew Union College.  Parts of the conference will be open to the faculty and students of both institutions, and parts to the general public.

Academic Committee:
Prof. Gaby Horenczyk, Dr. Michael Marmur, Dr. Hagit Hacohen-Wolf, and Dr. Michal Muszkat-Barkan.
Conference coordinator: Ronit Charust (to be contacted at – Ronitc@gmail.com or 02-6203364 )

Call for papers on the following subjects and questions:

  • Pluralistic education and education for pluralism around the world.
  • Pluralistic Jewish education – definitions, constructs, ideals and aims.
  • How and in what forms is pluralism reflected in pluralistic Jewish education? What are the unique features, educational methods, values and principles that under-gird this type of education?
  • Does pluralistic Jewish education come at a price? If so, what are its ‘costs’?
  • Is it possible to have religious pluralistic education?
  • The historical roots of pluralistic Jewish education in Jewish culture and in the different cultures at large.
  • The philosophical roots of pluralistic Jewish education within and outside of Jewish culture.
  • How may the pluralistic approach be applied to the curriculum in general, and Jewish education in particular?
  • What is the institutional culture of organizations that operate under the banner of pluralism?
  • A comparative examination of pluralistic Jewish education in Israel and abroad.
  • Inter-religious Jewish education – aims, features and critiques.
  • Characteristics of organizations and companies that need/develop/fly the banner of pluralistic Jewish education – a sociological observation.

We invite articles in a wide range of disciplines, including education, philosophy, sociology, Jewish studies, law and psychology that use an assortment of research methods, theoretical as well as empirical, (qualitative and quantitative).

Timetable:
Abstracts of articles may be submitted no later than 1 November, 2008 to Conference coordinator Ronit Charust-  Ronitc@gmail.com. The final date for submitting full articles is 30 April, 2009.
