28th Annual Meeting of the Association for Israel Studies

Multicultural Israel in a Global Perspective: Between One Society and Many Societies

The Program Committee of the 28th Annual Conference of the Association for Israel Studies to be held at the University of Haifa, June 25-27, 2012 invites scholars conducting research on any aspect of Israel studies to submit proposals for individual papers, organized panels and roundtable discussions relating to the theme of the conference “Multicultural Israel in a Global Perspective: Between One Society and Many Societies”.
Since its creation, the Jewish national movement has been characterized by a major paradox: it has been plagued by rifts and conflicts stemming from a variety of Jewish identities, while also submitting to internal and external integrating or moderating sociopolitical and cultural forces.

Is the State of Israel, which emerged from the Zionist movement, one society? Was it ever?

The 2012 annual conference of the AIS seeks to explore the political, socioeconomic, cultural and legal forces that generated conflict and cooperation in the Old Yishuv, Mandatory Palestine, and the period of the state’s founding and early development, and how similar forces affect Israeli society today.

The Program Committee encourages diverse studies concerning the main theme of the conference: Does Israel constitute one society or many societies that are in basic conflict with each other? What are the ramifications of these relationships and how does the friction compare to that which exists in other countries and to global processes? How do those conflicts and modes of cooperation shape public policy, Israeli law, and sociopolitical structures?

We especially invite studies that examine major sociopolitical transformations, including the relationships between Arab-Palestinians and Jews before and after the State of Israel’s establishment.

Papers on other topics relating to the broader field of Israel studies are also welcome.
